Newton Moore has just been announced runner up science school of the year for WA. We also have two award winning teachers including innovative science teacher of the year.
Wetlands
The wetlands is an area at the back of the school were we have a large area of native flora and fauna and swamps. They are a haven for some animals including
In the wetlands we record the water for how much Ph or iron is in the water and trap and record frog numbers. We have a fence surrounding the area keeping stray animals out making it a safe are for those endangered speices and we have also put up possum boxes.
Fish Breeding Program
We have our own fish breeding facilities within the boundries of the school and the wider community. We breed a few endangered fish species including the Pigmy Perch.
Mangroves and Dolphins
Classes each month from our school once a term head out to the Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre and we take a boat tour round Koombana Bay which is were our main population of bottle nose Dolphins. On the boat we take photos or identification, take water samples around the bay record umber of dolphin their behaviour and alliances which we then give to the centre. With the mangroves which is the most southernly population in the world we take water samples and do a macro invertibrate count. This infomation is given also to the centre.
Newton Moore are on Holidays from the 18th of December to the 2nd of Feb Merry christmas to all and a Happy New Year. :)
Newton Moore's Mascot is a fury little animal called a Ring Tailed Possum. The reason we have chosen a ring tailed is because they are endangered and we have a couple in our school wetlands. A while back unfortunately a cat was able to get into the wetlands and killed the possum and so in memory of the female possum we have named it Ringlet.
The name was chosen by us students by vote. Many weird and wonderful names came up just to name a few
But right from the start there was a student named Blake who wanted to name the possum Ringo but unfortunately the others decided that was not really a girls name see he went back and thought and then it hit him, Ringlet, it was a smash.
And thats how our mascot was discovered and got its name.
